UPFLOW OBS’s deployed
UPFLOW is a project led by PI Ana Ferreira, University College London (UCL) and funded by the European Research Council (ERC) that is deploying 50 highly sensitive seismometers (Ocean Bottom Seismometer, OBS) on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean (in the Azores-Madeira-Canary Islands region). It is hoped that this will fill a gap in our understanding of powerful movements deep within Earth’s interior. This was carried out in the summer of 2021. Seven of iMARL NAMMU OBS’s were deployed for this project. Sameneh Baranbooei, a DIAS PhD student, was on board for the deployment.
The instruments were retrieved in the Autumn of 2022.
The BBC wrote an article about how the UPFLOW deployment of OBS’s felt the Tonga volcanic eruption in January 2022 18,000km away – https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-64253634
