Ocean Bottom Seismometer network (OBS)

KUM NAMMU OBS
OBS Equipment for shipping

The OBS system can be used for: Earthquake monitoring, Detecting slope failures, Sub-seafloor imagery, Regional hydro-acoustic monitoring and ocean-land coupling studies, in deep water.

The OBS pool comprises a fleet of 17 K.U.M NAMMU instruments. It is a currently the smallest instrument designed for long-term deployments. The instrument has four simultaneous channels (three ground velocity and one broadband hydrophone) with 32 bit @ 250 sps, 142 dB at 300 mW total power consumption including its 120 sec broadband trillium compact seismometer from Nanometrics.

For the purposes of shipping, 4 floats can be stacked on one pallet. If using all the instruments, they can be transported in a fitted laboratory “20 foot” container (standard 20 foot certified sea container: 8 feet wide, unladen weight 2.2 tonnes), which can be brought on-board the ship.

Features / Benefits:

  • Frame: Made from corrosion-resistant titanium and durable syntactic foam, the frame offers buoyancy in a shock-resistant
and robust package that can easily endure the forces of the sea. The unit’s small size makes it possible to deploy more systems than ever before.
  • Sensors: Broadband seismometer Trillium Compact 120 sec
  • Datalogger: The Datalogger 6D6 is a flexible data acquisition system with the lowest power consumption on the market and outstanding data quality. It features an easy programming interface accessible via Wi-Fi and large storage capacities to enable extended deployment of up to three years.
  • Acoustic Releaser: The releaser brings the instrument back to the surface in perfect condition. It is the world’s smallest, most lightweight titanium release unit – fully reliable in even the most challenging circumstances.
